The Outdoor Oops… Well Kinda!

Max the doodle was one of the first doggy daycare dogs to see the new outside play area.

Max the doodle was one of the first doggy daycare dogs to see the new outside play area.

2 years ago we were the first dog daycare to use recycled turf in our outside play area and we LOVE it.  Here are the problems with the other types of surfaces commonly used at doggy daycare:

Pea Sized Gravel – The most common but rocks fly everywhere when dogs run and many dog love to eat the rocks.  Rocks are very dusty and dogs go home really dirty.

Wood chips – They hold smell (think how many dogs go to the bathroom on them everyday).  You can’t clean them because cleaning solution soaks into the wood chips.  Plus they smell really bad when they are wet.

Regular grass – Pretty obvious why this is not a good option.. You can never clean it, dogs get dirty and muddy anytime there is rain or you play with the hose and grass never grows because dogs are always running on it.

We LOVE our recycled turf, it comes from an old sports stadium and fits in well with us trying to be a “green” doggy daycare.  The turf hold up great and we just wanted to freshen up the look of what we had outside.  When the guys were almost done installing the turf, they realized someone had mis-measured, so we did not have enough to do the whole area.  So there is a small corner that is not finished yet.  I guess everyone learned the lesson of Measure 10 times and order 1 time :)  Not big deal, it should be 100% finished by the end of the week.  I was out there when the dogs first saw the new turf today and they LOVED it.  I am so glad we went with this option 2 years ago because I could not imagine sending home really muddy, or super dirty dogs.

Have a good night.

Coyote’s in St Louis Park

March 6, 2012 by Keith | 1 Comment

Coyote in St Louis Park,mn

I just received this email from the City of St Louis Park stating that there have been several Coyote sightings in the area.  If you have a smaller dog please make sure they are always supervised when they are outside as they are the highest risk.  More information can be found on the city website.  Below is some of the information that was in the email.

Coyotes in urban areas are not a new phenomenon, but recently there have been several coyote sightings in St. Louis Park and unfortunately a small dog was recently killed by a wild animal.  The City’s website has information on dealing with coyotes:  http://www.stlouispark.org/keeping-informed/coyotes-are-among-us.html.  The attached articles can also be found in that website article.

Edina is offering free coyote training classes that are open to non-residents:

Jack’s Last Day

February 17, 2012 by Keith | Comments Off
Jack at doggy daycare

Jack brought treats for all the daycare dogs on his last day!

Today was a sad day for all of us at Pampered Pooch Playground.  Jack the Boston Terrier had his last day of doggy daycare before he moved to Indianapolis!  We always hate to see our dogs move away and Jack was no exception.  When Jack’s mom dropped him off for doggy daycare, she broke the news to us.  We quickly started talking about how Jack was one of our first doggy daycare dogs 4 years ago when we opened!  Oh Jack, we are gaining to miss his crazy “noises” he makes when he plays with things and his little wiggle when he comes through the front door.

Hope everyone has a good night!

Happy Holidays!

December 25, 2011 by Keith | Comments Off

Happy Holidays to everyone! This is always a really buys time around the PPP, and I have to say a very special thank you to all of our staff that make everything run so smoothly. So many daycares close for the dogs (the just let them out for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours at night), but we make it a regular day of play for all of our overnight dogs. Doing this requires our staff to give up more of their holiday, but we feel that it is better for the dogs to stay in routine and not in a cage. So again, a big thanks to all of our crew who are working extra hard taking care of the hotel guests today!

I also want to thank all of our customers. I really feel that we have the greatest customers around!!

As many of you know, I am from the Chicago area. I thought I would leave you with a Chicago TV tradition. Every Christmas, WGN would play the Hardrock, Coco and Joe cartoon. Thanks to youtube, It is below :)

Have a great holiday, and thanks so much for being one of our customers!

iPhone Update

December 20, 2011 by Keith | Comments Off

I was all a twitter when I saw the new version of Pooch Vision in my update list.

We just released the latest version of “Pooch Vision” which is our app for the iPhone.  This being the 4th version, we think is is the best yet.  We have made it possible to pay for doggy daycare and soon you will be able to check your pooch out before you even walk into our building (we are waiting on an update to our software for this and have been pushing the company for this feature for 2 years).  We are all about making life easy for you, but also connecting you to your pooch.  The whole purpose for the iPhone app is to allow you to watch your dog while they are playing at doggy daycare.  Webcams provide a great sense of security and let you know how we operate.  You can also read our blog, make reservations, and keep up on the latest dog events in Minneapolis.

In January we will be doing some remodeling in the 2 big dog rooms, and we will be adding more webcams, so watching your pooch will be even more fun!  Many daycares have contacted me asking “why would you have an iPhone app and webcams”… My response has always been “why the heck not”… Our app might not be as cool as the Starbucks app where you can pay at register by letting them scan your phone, but we are getting closer and closer to that!  We are still one of the few dog daycares in the country that have their own iPhone app which is a free download.

Those that don’t have an iPhone, we also have “Pooch Vision” available for the droid and blackberry.

Have a great night!
